Should You Trust Generic or Unbranded Medication?

Why would you want to buy generic medication when you could buy the brand name?  The number one reason that people choose generic meds is the cost.  You will be able to find generic options at a price that is much lower than commercial branded medications.  With more people trying to save money these days, this is a great option for better health.  However, many people wonder if they work as well as the name brands do.

The FDA states that even though the generic drug might have a different look or size from the name brand counterpart, those differences can’t have an effect on the effectiveness or safety of the medicine.  The generic medication needs to have the same active ingredient at the same strength level per dosage.  Most people who decide to take the generic meds find that they work just as well as the name brands do, and that they could have been saving money in the past.

Of course, not everyone feels this way.  If you’ve been taking a name brand drug and you like the way it works and believe that it is better than the generic, then you should continue taking what you know and like.  Many people have brand loyalty and even when the generic version works just as well, they would rather stick with the name they know and trust.

However, in a tight economy, opting for a lower price product is always a good idea to save money.  If you don’t like the look or taste of generic brands, you can always switch back to the ones you prefer.  Check with your doctor before making the switch.
