Why Learning Your Family’s Health History is Vital to Your Own Health

Genetic traits travel down through the generations.  You may look remarkably like one of your grandparents and your children might look like you.  The traits passed through the generations of your family are more than just physical appearance, though.  Certain health conditions also travel through the family line.  That is why it is so important for you to know your family’s health history.

Some of the common health problems that you will be able to trace through your family history are diabetes and heart problems.  If your ancestors had high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, or high cholesterol, there is a good chance that you and your children are at risk of developing these health problems as well.

Of course, diabetes and heart issues are not the only health conditions that can be passed down.  Color blindness, kidney problems, alcoholism and even hair loss are often genetic.

When you know in advance what health problems your family has had in the past, it gives you the information you need to take steps now to correct them in your own life.  You can change your lifestyle and make sure that your children are eating right and taking the right measures to prevent health problems from forming.

Finding your family’s health history should be relatively easy.  Talk with your parents and other relatives and ask them about their own health issues and the issues that their parents and grandparents might have had.  The right information can go a long way in making sure that you remain healthy.
