Why You Should Avoid Using Old Cosmetics

Eyeliner, lipstick and foundation are just a few of common cosmetic products that are an important part of looking your best.  However, make-up is not exempt from expiration dates, and keeping them too long can cause health problems.

Bacteria buildup in your used cosmetics can put your entire face, and even your eyes, at risk for developing allergies, breakouts or rashes.  The most common culprits are eyeliner and mascara, any products that you use near your eyes.  Bacteria buildup can easily enter your eye, causing painful infections and swelling.

Generally, you should throw out cosmetics like eyeliner and eye shadow about every six months.  If the product dries out, do not re-moisten it.  Never add water or saliva to a product to make it usable, as you’ll be basically soaking your cosmetic in possibly harmful bacteria.  Toss it out and buy new cosmetics instead of taking risks.

You should even be cautious of those cosmetics that are “all natural,” as these can lack the preservatives and chemicals that provide long life to some makeup products.

Lip gloss and lipstick, on the other hand, lasts up to 14 months and simply needs to be maintained and cleaned by using alcohol.  Like lipware, makeup brushes lasts a long time, up to a few years, but needs to be cleaned every few weeks with cleaning products.  Try Mac Brush Cleaner, or GloMinerals.

Another thing to mention is that if you get sick, with a cold, flu, rash or other communicable illness, it’s a good idea to sterilize or replace your cosmetics when you are better.  Often the virus or bacteria that made you sick in the first place can get on your cosmetics, and you’ll be re-infecting yourself each time you re-apply.  For this reason alone, you should never share cosmetics with a sick friend, and beware the sample testers at your local makeup or beauty store.

In addition, this rule applies to things beyond just makeup and includes lotions, lip balms and anything containing SPF.  When in doubt, check the product’s expiration date; if there is no expiration date, be cautious and throw the cosmetics away.
