TV moms such as June Cleaver from ‘Leave it to Beaver,’ offered the wholesome ideal of motherhood in the 50s and 60s. She was always there when her sons needed her, walked around in an apron, and made a home cooked dinner every night.
Other mothers of the era, including Laura Petrie from "The Dick Van Dyke Show," brought a certain air of sexiness to mothers that the world’s TV audience hadn’t seen before, even though they seem mild and a little plain by today’s comparisons.
Moving into the late 70s and early 80s, one of the top TV mothers was Marion Cunningham from ‘Happy Days.’ The show, which was set in the 1950s and 60s, hearkens back to the old days, but offers a new look at the role mom played. Mrs. Cunningham was a lot tougher than June Cleaver was!
Florida Evans from ‘Good Times’ portrayed a mother in the projects who was struggling to raise her children right. In direct contrast, Roseanne Conner from "Rosanne" showed the life of a blue collar mom whose family was trying to make ends meet, in spite of constant family feuds and chaos.
