Beating the Stereotype: Are All Auto Repair Shops Unscrupulous?

Many people have trouble trusting their auto mechanics, and there are some good reasons for this.  First, the bad apples have definitely ruined the bunch and have given many auto repair specialists bad names because they defraud their customers. 

Second, most people don’t understand the inner workings of their vehicle.  Speaking with a mechanic about the parts of a transmission can be just like talking to a heart surgeon about valves and arteries.  Because people don’t know the terms used, they can’t follow the conversation.  They already have in the back of their mind that the mechanic is out to cheat them.  Is this always true?  No, of course not!  It’s a stereotype.  Many auto repair specialists are perfectly trustworthy.

However, you don’t want to choose just any mechanic or auto repair shop for the job.  Even though the majority of them are honest, you don’t want to choose the one that happens to milk you for your last dime. 

To find the best mechanic in your area, research online and find out if they are part of the BBB.  Ask around to some of your friends and relatives to see if they have a mechanic that they use and that they trust.  Check their company’s reviews on Yelp or any other online review website.  Choosing your auto repair shop after researching to find the honest and trustworthy ones in your area is going to save you from a lot of grief.

Once you find a mechanic that you like, you should return to them when you need service.  Let others know that you’ve found an honest mechanic and send more business their way.
