Winter Sports and Family Activities You’ll Love

When winter comes around, it can be hard to resist the urge to make every day a watching-TV or movie day as you snuggle inside in the warm.  When you want to spend time with your family during this time of year, however, you might be surprised to consider how many excellent winter family activities there really are… if you can just get up the willpower to get ‘out and about!’

From great winter sports to fun games, there is much to do outside, especially if you’ve just had a fall of fresh snow.

One of the best winter family activities for small kids and adults alike is building a snowman.  It is very easy, and you can be as creative as you like.  Gathering snow into large balls is fun on its own, but bringing out old Halloween costumes or fun clothing to dress your snowmen in allows you to turn it into quite an event.  Try building a ‘snow family’, with each member of your family building a snowman (or woman) that resembles them.  You can even make one for the family dog!  Pose next to them for the world’s most memorable family group shot.

Sledding is another great choice for winter family activities.  There are sleds of all shapes and sizes, ensuring that older kids can ride alone, while the little ones can tag along with mom or dad.  If you live in an area with many steep hills or rocky terrain, consider asking your kids to wear their bike or skating helmets when they sled, as even a small sled is quite capable if reaching high speeds on a steep hill.

For even more adventures, consider skiing or ice skating.  There are rinks and ski trails in virtually every state that gets snow, and there are certainly rink times and specific areas designed for people with younger children.  If you live in a warmer state, check your local listings to find an indoor skate rink in your area.  Be sure to wrap up warm.

The last on our list of winter family activities is making snow angels.  It’s fast and easy for kids that really don’t want to spend time in the cold, yet there is something fun that makes even adults feel young again. Bring a camera to take pictures of the best ones – you won’t be able to persuade them to do this once they hit their teens!

When you want to enjoy quality outdoor time with your loved ones, these winter family activities make great ideas for all the family.  You may even find yourself missing the snow when it goes!
