The Best Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Shepherd’s pie is one of winter’s ultimate comfort foods.  Originating in Europe hundreds of years ago and now a favorite all around the world, there are few dishes that are heartier and more flavorful.

Today, we will look at the best shepherd’s pie recipe.  This recipe is perfect for families seeking a warming, extremely filling meal, and it is certain to delight every member of the household.

For this recipe, you will need:

2 pounds peeled and cubed potatoes
2 tablespoons sour cream
1 egg yolk
½ cup cream
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 ¾ pounds ground beef
1 peeled and chopped carrot
1 chopped onion
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
1 cup beef broth
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
½ cup frozen peas
1 teaspoon paprika
2 tablespoons chopped parsley leaves

To make this great recipe, start by boiling your potatoes in salted water for about twelve minutes or until tender.  Drain the potatoes and put them into a bowl.  In a separate dish, mix the sour cream, egg yolk, and cream.  Add this mixture into your potatoes and mash together until smooth.

While your potatoes are boiling, start the filling for the pie by browning your beef in a skillet of hot oil and salt or pepper to taste.  Drain the meat if desired and add in the chopped onion and carrot. Cook the meat and vegetables together for 5 minutes and add in broth and Worcestershire sauce.  Add gravy to meat and vegetable mixture and stir in peas.

Fill a glass casserole dish with meat and veggies and spoon potatoes over the top to form a 1 or 2 inch-thick ‘crust.’  Take a fork and rake it down the top of the potatoes in parallel lines. This will give you a deletable crunchy top.  Sprinkle paprika on top and broil until potatoes are evenly browned, then top with parsley and serve.

This recipe is a surefire hit, and your family will love our tasty winter shepherd’s pie!
