How to Mix a Hurricane Cocktail For Mardi Gras

If you’ve ever been to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, you’ll know that the one cocktail that Mardi Gras is famous (or perhaps infamous) for is the Hurricane!  This festive, orange-red drink is traditionally served in large, pint-sized glasses garnished with fruit.  It tastes as yummy and harmless as fruit punch – while delivering a sneaky dose of pure sugar mixed with almost tasteless alcohol.

Just one or two glasses will knock you under the table quicker than your bar tab bill at the end of the night.  You have been warned!

Here’s what you’ll need to make it:

2 fl oz light-colored rum

2 fl oz dark-colored rum

2 fl oz passion fruit juice

1 fl oz orange juice

Half fl oz fresh lime juice

1 tablespoon of simple syrup

1 tablespoon grenadine

Garnish: (optional)

Cocktail cherries

Orange slices

Castor sugar

Steps:

To make this festive beverage, take a large mixing bowl and pour in the two types of rum, the fruit juice and the lime juice.  Stir together slowly to mix the alcohol for your Hurricane.

Next, pour in the lime juice or squeeze a whole fresh lime into your dastardly concoction.  Add the syrup and grenadine, and you’re ready to go.

Serving Suggestion:

Serve in tall balloon glasses.  To make the Hurricane garnish, slice an orange lengthways into slices, and cut each slice in half.  Twist slice into an ‘S’ shape and slide a cocktail stick through it to hold the shape.  Add a cherry on one end.

You can also frost the rim of your glass by upending the glass, and dipping just the rim first into a sauce of cold water, then into a saucer filled with fine white castor sugar.  Leave to ‘set’ for 30 minutes before serving.
