A Healthy Brown Bag School Lunch for the Kids

Providing your kids with a lunch that is both healthy and delicious can be hard. Most children go to school, only to see that their friends are bringing in junk food and processed items that are tasty but almost entirely devoid of nutrients.  How do you make a kids lunch that is as healthy as it is tasty, and more importantly, make sure they’ll eat it?

The key to a great brown bag kids lunch is to combine the things that your kids want most with the things that you most want them to eat.  For example, if your children love a kids lunch of Peanut Butter and Jelly but you are concerned about the abundance of unhealthy additives in standard sandwich bread, consider making the sandwich on a wheat wrap or some seven layer whole grain bread.  A great way to get kids to eat brown bread is to start them off with some honey-flavored wheat bread (available at most supermarkets under brand names like Sara Lee). They will love the sweet taste and soon get used to the new texture and color. Then you can switch them to regular brown bread and they will not likely notice the difference.

A great wrap using lunch meat, veggies, and a healthy topping can also be a big hit. You can make a wrap with anything from sweet salad ingredients to meatloaf and mash! Just make sure you use waterproof wrapping to keep kid’s fingers and uniforms clean.

For kids, the hallmark of any brown bag lunch is dessert.  There are plenty of great items that you can offer in a kids lunch that are both delicious and healthy.  Popcorn without butter is a popular choice, as is a bag of baked potato chips.  There are some very flavorful low-fat yogurt options available, and if your child really prefers chocolate, you can even consider some trail mix with a few chocolate morsels inside.

A great brown bag kids lunch is largely about finding out what your kids enjoy most and then creating healthy alternatives that offer the flavors they seek.  Be certain to consider the beverage you are sending, as well.  100% fruit juice is always a great choice, and there are many water beverages that include added juice or flavoring.  Packing a kids lunch that is filled with healthy, delicious foods will not only teach better eating habits, but it can provide them the nutrients and energy needed to excel throughout the school day.
