How to Pick a Body Soap That Suits Your Specific Skin Type

You probably realized long ago that your facial soap should be different than your body soap, simply because your facial skin is a lot more delicate than the rest of your body.  Choosing the right soap for your body can be complicated, simply because of the myriad of products available on the beauty store shelves.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you choose a product.

First, a harsh bar soap is great for cleaning dirt, but it can easily strip the skin of its natural moisturizers.  A moisturizing bar is best for most skin types.  If you have acne-prone skin on your back or chest, you may wish to use a separate acne wash on these areas.

Liquid body soaps work just as well as bar soaps, and they are even a little more convenient,  because as they come in bottles, you don’t have to worry about a soap bar melting in a dish beside the bath.  By choosing a formulation that’s close to your pH (5.0), you’re less likely to have irritating dry spots on your skin.

Antibacterial bars and liquids often contain triclosan, which may cause problems with the thyroid gland.  Antibacterial products have not been proven to be any more effective than standard formulations, so don’t be fooled by this ‘big promise’ label.

Botanical gels and body bars are natural and deliver wonderful scents, but beware of any product that has strong dyes and fragrances.  If you have sensitive skin, steer clear of added colors and fragrances in your soap.

In the end, the right soap for you won’t leave flaky patches anywhere on your body.  if your skin feels dry, tight or greasy after using a soap bar, you’ll know that it is not working with your body as it should be.
