Prohibition Dining
The 21 Club combines a bar and lounge with a restaurant. The first version of the 21 Club actually opened back in 1922, and went under the name the Red Head – it was a speakeasy of no small renown. It was moved several times during Prohibition, and had several names before finally becoming the 21 Club in 1929.
Famous Patrons
Several famous people have frequented the 21 Club over the years, including some of Hollywood’s elite, such as Marilyn Monroe and Sammy Davis Jr. Politicians have also enjoyed the offerings of the 21 Club, including John F. Kennedy, Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon. In fact, every president since FDR has visited the club, with George W. Bush being the only exception.
Literary Heritage
Today, the 21 Club is both a restaurant and a tourist destination in New York City. There was even a book written about the club, detailing its history, its famous (and infamous) patrons, and its role in the city’s history.
If you will be visiting New York City, then you’ll find the 21 Club at 21 West 52nd Street. Make sure you dress appropriately – jeans are not allowed, and a jacket is required to get inside this venue. However, once inside, you’ll find that the atmosphere is certainly enjoyable, particularly if you have a penchant for U.S. history.
