Why Soccer Continues to Gain in Popularity in the US

Around the world, there is no bigger sport than soccer. Teams are sources of national pride and, globally, the sport out-performs all others.

In the US, soccer has typically lagged behind sports such as football and baseball in popularity. In recent years, however, it has been gaining more recognition. Unlike sports such as baseball, football and hockey, getting young people into soccer is very inexpensive, due to the fact that so little equipment is required. Soccer is also more accessible to kids who aren’t necessarily the strongest, tallest or fastest among their peers.

At the professional level, Major League Soccer has been consistently gaining in popularity. The sport has become popular enough that some rivalries have started to develop, such as between the US and Mexico, adding some good-natured competitiveness to the game for fans. Soccer is very popular on television, with viewership consistently increasing over the years. The FIFA World Cup was very popular with US fans and received more news coverage than has been the norm for this sport.

In the US, soccer is beginning to overtake other sports and may soon find itself among the very marketable sports in the nation. More and more cities are getting professional teams and, with increased television viewership, more fans are getting to know their local team. Attendance at games has also increased a great deal, even for exhibition matches that feature world-renowned players from other nations who come to boost interest in the sport.
