Why Lambeau Field is Different to Most Sports Venues in the US

Sports has always been the source of great outpourings of emotions from fans. In Green Bay, US, Lambeau Field is a source of city and state pride. Lambeau Field is the longest-occupied professional football venue in the US. It is just as important to the fans of the Packers as the team itself. Though the city has expressed open-mindedness to renaming this sports venue, they set a price tag of $100 million for the privilege, which makes it apparent that they’re not too ready to sell that right just yet!

The Packers themselves have expressed a desire to keep Lambeau Field known by its current name. In Wisconsin, sports are extremely popular pastimes. Here, football notably surpasses hockey in popularity, unlike the situation in neighboring Minnesota and in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This “hometown” feel, even though Lambeau Field is a venue for professional sports, has given this stadium a nostalgic appeal that is unusual in the very high-priced, financially-driven world of professional sports.

In many ways, the relationship of sports fans with Lambeau Field and the way they regard it hearkens back to a simpler time. The Packers have long been as associated with Wisconsin as dairy farming and the lumber industry, and are almost as important economically to the area. Lambeau Field remains one of the few sports venues where the fans still have a say in who plays there and what name the venue is known by. In the corporate world of sponsor-named sports venues, Lambeau Field stands alone as one of the few that holds onto its proud community traditions. And that, in itself, is a great reason to keep it.
