What to Expect on Your First Day of Beauty School

Once you have applied to beauty school and are in an accepted program, you will most likely be excited to get started.  It will be the stepping stone you need to beginning your career path.  It’s normal to approach the first day with a little trepidation, but keep in mind that everyone is a beginner and has the same degree of butterflies.

Keep in mind that beauty school is for the beginner.  It’s designed to train someone who is completely unaware in the world of cosmetology.  Come in looking polished and professional.  Many schools will provide you with uniforms and shoes that you’ll regularly have to attend class in, but for the first day you want to make a good impression on your instructor and peers.  Dress in black and avoid faded or old clothing.  Jeans are a bad idea, at least in the first week.  You’ll see many different types of people in your class, some will be dressed in heels, whereas others will have sloppy attire.  And of course, make sure your own make-up is immaculate!

Don’t expect to delve into training on the first day.  Your instructor will go over what you can expect from the rest of the program and will provide you with the necessary information and tools.  It’s wise to come prepared with any of your own tools or supplies.

Of course, what you can expect on the first day will depend on the types of beauty schools you will be attending.  If it is a general cosmetology program, you can expect something different than a specialized program for hair design or another type of specialty.  Call the school a week in advance, or email your instructors, and ask if anything is needed on the first day.  Bring a notepad and pen to show you are interested and eager to learn.
