How to Sneak More Nutrition Into Your Child’s Desserts

Finding the right dessert for your kids can be difficult.  After all, by their very nature, most desserts are sweet, sugary and very unhealthy.  However, that does not mean that your little ones have to go without any dessert.  You can actually let them choose the treats that appeal to them most and then make that food more nutritious.

Ice Cream
Ice cream is perhaps the most popular dessert option out there.  However, you can add more nutrition to this treat by substituting frozen yogurt or sorbet.  If you really want to go the healthy route, consider using soy ice cream from your local health food store instead.  Add a handful of blackberries, blueberries and strawberries to the top of the ice-cream and you’ll be sure that they eat them too.

Strawberry Shortcake
This sweet dessert treat is very popular, but you can make it more healthy with ease.  Consider using fresh strawberries and a sugar substitute here.  You should also use low-fat whipped cream, and you can even find low sugar cakes that will offer great taste and better health.

Cakes and Pies
If you are making your own cakes and pies as dessert, you can cut the amount of sugar and fat called for in your recipes.  However, if you are buying these treats from the bakers or the store, look for reduced sugar cakes and pies, or even diabetic dessert options, as these will be lower in sugar.  Also, consider purchasing organic cakes and other treats.

With a bit of creativity, you can find any number of ways to make your children’s dessert choices more healthy and nutritious.  And they will still taste great!
