Fun Groundhog Day Activities for the Whole Family

On February 2, Groundhog Day, everyone will be able to see the famous Punxsutawney Phil pop his head out of his hole and determine what the rest of the winter will be like.  If he sees his shadow, it means that there will be six more weeks of bad wintry weather.  If he doesn’t see his shadow, it means that warmer weather is just around the corner.

Of course, we have meteorologists who can determine all of this for us, but the tradition of Groundhog Day is fun.  Your kids will especially be able to enjoy it when you come up with some fun activities for the holiday.

Have your children each draw portraits of the famous little groundhog, and have them write a Groundhog Day story to go along with it.  You can also ask your child his or her predictions about whether or not they think Phil will see his shadow on Groundhog Day.  Make sure that you ask your child the night before!

If you live too far away from the town of Punxsutawney, you can always visit virtually through their website.  Your kids will actually get to see the groundhog in action!

Of course, what Groundhog Day would be complete without watching the Bill Murray classic as a movie rental?  The title of the film, naturally, is “Groundhog Day!”  It is a fun comedy that is perfect for everyone in the family.

While many people don’t appreciate the day to its fullest, Groundhog Day can be a great way to connect with the kids.  Do not miss out on a fun opportunity and a learning experience for the little ones.
