Superdog Choosing the Perfect Dog For You

With so many dog breeds out there, is it possible to find the perfect one? In a way, such a quest is like determining what the perfect food is. From my experience and research, the ‘perfect’ dog is the right one for you, a dog that fits your lifestyle, personality and needs. Let’s break that down into the following categories to see if the perfect dog does indeed exist.

Smart Dog!

The most important aspect for me is intelligence. I want a dog that obeys commands well and can do multiple tricks.  I believe a pet should be interactive, so a smart dog should have the ability to communicate and be trained. If you want a dog you can train, it has been proven time and again that the smartest breeds are: Border Collies, Poodles, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers, and Papillons.  The Bulldog and the Boxer would be at the bottom of this list.

Pretty Dog!

The second factor in choosing the perfect dog is aesthetics. Beauty is certainly subjective, but to me great dogs represent the best conventions of the species: strong, confident, and robust with an elegant presence.  If you want a dog like this, then you’ll want a dog to represent authority yet gentle enough to be compatible with other people, small children and dogs. So, ‘nippy’ and ‘barky’ small dogs are out – Papillons, Chihuahuas, Maltipoos, even the Border Collie. All have proven tendencies to nip, to develop obsessive personality disorders and to yap incessantly – all characteristics that make such an animal a bad choice as a family dog or a protector.

Fast Dog!

Third is energy. A dog than can fetch for a long period of time and one that can run alongside you at the park or beach is always a pleasure to behold. They must be courageous enough to explore the water too. If you are an active person, then your ideal dog would keep up with and compliment your active lifestyle.  These breeds include the Retrievers and Shepherds.

Popular Dog!

So far we have smart, beautiful, and active breeds. But what else marks a perfect dog?  Popularity.  Not to say it is always smart to choose things other people want, but a breed that so many people own and have owned is indicative to their versatility.  If a million people with different lifestyles have the same breed, it is a testament to the compatibility of that type.  So a popular breed indicates patience and friendliness. The friendliest dogs are generally cross-breeds and ‘mutts’, but if you have your heart set on a pedigree then you’ll find Retrievers to be among the most amiable breeds out there.

Ideal Dog!

Weighing all of these options, the perfect breed for most lifestyle choices is the Golden Retriever. It is one of the most popular breeds in the world because of its ability to get along with a variety of people and animals. With their broad chest and powerful posture, they represent the ideals of a canine. Their stature is complimented by their gentle and playful nature – one that can be strengthened by training. They can keep up with active owners, or lay next to you while watching TV on a Sunday night. According to the guidelines laid here, there is no doubt the Golden Retriever is the epitome of a perfect pet dog.

To sum up, the true test of a perfect dog is one that fits your personality well. Either way you go, having a dog is far more satisfying and fun than not having one at all!

Other Perfect Dogs…

Besides the Golden Retriever, the Maltipoo has become incredibly popular in recent years. From experience (my brother owns two of them!) Maltipoos are cuddly, intelligent, and clean!  These dogs do not shed because both a Maltese and Poodle grow hair instead of fur. Additionally, if you get one with a lot of poodle mixed in, they are incredibly easy to train due to the poodle’s intelligence. They are perfect to cuddle with as a lap dog, which is one thing a Golden Retriever would have a difficult time doing.
