WikiLeaks has spent a great deal of time in the news lately. The website has long been known as a government whistle blower, revealing confidential documents, videos, and information regarding the US government and military to citizens over the web.
When Amazon removed WikiLeaks from the web recently, the Wiki founders called it a breach of free speech, but the US government wholeheartedly approved.
Joe Leiberman, chairman of the committee of Homeland Security in the Senate, initially contacted Amazon to request that the site be pulled off of their servers. Not only has the released information embarrassed our country as well as others in the media, it has also released hundreds of thousands of pages of confidential documents that were seized or obtained illegally.
Many political leaders worldwide want the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange imprisoned or executed, and he actually has outstanding warrants.
What happens to WikiLeaks in the long run remains to be seen. For now, the website has found a new host in Sweden, where Assange is currently a wanted criminal on unrelated charges. The future of the website is uncertain at best, but chances are good that it will remain in the headlines for quite some time. Amazon has certainly made headlines themselves in choosing to pull the site, which may translate into extra revenue.
The long-term results of pulling the ‘free speech’ site remain to be seen.
