Weight Gain Tips for Underweight Individuals

If you are underweight, it can certainly be frustrating.  This often makes it hard to shop for clothing, and it can even lead people to make assumptions about you based on your appearance.  People may gossip that you are anorexic or bulimic when you simply have a high metabolism, and you may find that you feel the cold more harshly than most people.

Unfortunately, for many underweight individuals, gaining weight isn’t as simple as eating more fattening meals.  If you are serious about gaining weight, here’s a few tips to get you started.

Determine How Many Calories Your Body Needs

One great thing to do is to consider the use of a body calculator such as the one found at http://www.dietitian.com/calcbody.php.  This can help you determine the caloric needs of your body in order to maintain weight.  You can then determine your weight gain goals and adjust as needed.

Eat More Often

Instead of the traditional three large meals a day, aim to always eat three meals as well as three snacks.  This will keep your body filled with fuel at all times.

Drink Diet Soda to Increase Hunger

If you find you are simply not hungry enough to eat three meals, here’s a little-known trick – sip drink sugar-free or zero calorie diet Coke or Pepsi throughout the day and you will find you get hungry more often.  Whilst drinking these so-called ‘diet’ drinks may sound counter-intuitive, drinking any kind of sweetened drink (especially ones with carbonation) fools your brain into thinking it is about to get food due to the sweet taste in your mouth.  When no food arrives in your stomach, you will find yourself getting almost unnaturally hungry. Don’t drink non sugar-free sodas, however, or your teeth will suffer.

Choose the Right Foods

Even when you want to stop being underweight, you need to ensure that you are eating healthy.  Ingesting nothing but fast food may add a bit of weight, but it will certainly be unhealthy and can lead to major health issues in the long run such as Osteoporosis or breast/ stomach cancers.  Keep nutrients in mind when choosing meals.

Work on Muscle

Muscle weighs more than fat, and it is healthier, too.  If you are underweight and want to build bulk, try strength training exercises and start using weights.

Lay Off the Caffeine
Caffeine may be great when you need a burst of energy in the morning, but it is an appetite suppressant.  Avoid coffee and tea and you might be surprised at how hungry your body really is.

Being underweight is certainly frustrating, and gaining weight isn’t always easy.  If you want to stop being underweight, these tips can help.
