Post Exercise Respiratory Problems That Mirror Asthma

Getting regular exercise is the best thing you can do for your health, according to the vast majority of health professionals.  However, some individuals who exercise heavily may experience a respiratory disruption that feels a lot like asthma.  You may get a tight chest, start coughing, have a hard time breathing and, quite frequently, have a serious anxiety attack because of these symptoms.

Some individuals only experience these symptoms when they exercise.  The cause is believed to be these individuals being more sensitive to changes in humidity and air temperature.  When the term respiratory reactive disease is used, however, some doctors bristle.  This term really doesn’t mean anything and isn’t a real diagnosis.  Most often, it has to do with exposure to irritants and is not considered to be actual asthma.

If you experience asthma-like symptoms during exercise, you have to visit a doctor.  Asthma, have no doubt about it, can kill you.  There may be other factors that are causing the attacks aside from exercise, as well.  Allergies and emotional stress are both triggers.  Your doctor will have to make a thorough examination to determine whether or not you actually have asthma and whether vigorous exercise is appropriate for you.

Any changes to your exercise program should be cleared with your doctor before you start, particularly if you have any sort of chronic condition.  Asthma, exercise induced or otherwise, is dangerous and always needs to be treated by a qualified medical professional.
