How to Become Popular 10 Easy Steps

As a military brat, I have been enrolled in over a dozen schools since I was a child.  Barely staying in the same state for longer than two years, I had to learn to adapt quickly when my father transferred locations.  I remember detesting the day we got the inevitable news – when my brother and I were told to pack our stuff and load the truck.  Looking back, although I had trouble adjusting to so many different places, I learned a lot about making new friends and the importance of building long lasting relationships.

When high school hit we finally settled down and I was able to meet a number of new friends and eventually expanded my network.  If you are trying to increase your popularity, follow these steps.

1. Get Involved in Something That Interests You.

Whatever you enjoy, whether it’s singing, sports, or art, there are a number of other people with similar interests.  Get involved by joining a group or club.  High schools, colleges, and communities will all have groups of people who are interested in the things you are.  This is a great way to connect with people who have similar hobbies.

2. Be Talented.

Obviously it’s impossible to choose a talent that you are born with.  However, 99% of talent comes from hard work and persistence.  Take the time to refine and improve your skills in a particular subject.  Some things like sports and music that are more geared towards an audience will help you become more popular.

3. Step Outside of Your Shell

In order to become popular, you need to meet new people.  This means going out of your comfort zone and doing things you would normally avoid.  Talk to that group of girls or guys who always hang around your basketball court, or try taking a new class.

4. Be Charismatic

Charismatic people are fun to be around.  If you can be charming and witty, people will gravitate towards you.

5. Be Open Minded

If you are accepting to people from different walks of life and with different personalities, you open yourself up to more potential friendships.

6. Be Optimistic

Few people can get away with being introverted and depressing.  Although it might garner pity, being sad or angry all the time is one of the worst ways to become popular.  You want people to enjoy your company and by being positive you are improving other people’s experiences.  Would you rather hang out with the guy who is always complaining about their life, or the one that tries to find the best in every situation?

7. Have Style

Make sure your hair is nice and your clothes are clean.  Your clothes say a lot about you so carry yourself in a professional (but not uptight) manner.  Make sure you are taking care of your basic hygiene as well.  You should look and smell clean in order to be attractive.

8. Improve Your Body Image

Looks aren’t everything, but it is a fact that we gravitate towards aesthetically pleasing people.  You don’t need to look like a supermodel, but hitting the gym once in a while can do a lot for your self-image.  Also, it will boost your self-confidence.

9. Be Confident

True confidence, not cockiness, is an effective way to gain respect.  Confident people know how to make decisions when necessary and have the abilities to lead effectively.  Avoid being a pushover because it tends to show insecurity.

10. Be Yourself

You can do all of these steps while still maintaining your identity.  If you sacrifice your individuality then you likely will come off as snobbish and fake.  This will definitely turn people off and result in popularity for the wrong reasons.

Be yourself and be happy with who you are.  Don’t base your success on how popular you get, instead focus on your personal goals and strive to accomplish those.
