You Go Oprah How Oprah Winfrey Started Her Own Cable Network

If you have enjoyed The Oprah Winfrey Show (ending in September, 2011) then you will be delighted to know that Oprah will soon be starting her own television network.  Oprah’s channel will be on satellite and cable TV, and will be produced by Harpo Productions (that’s Oprah’s name backwards) and Discovery Communications.

The channel is named, quite modestly, The Oprah Winfrey Network.

The OWN channel is not actually a new entity; it is replacing the old Discovery Health Channel.  No major transition is needed, as many of Oprah’s programs and sensibilities center on emotional, mental and spiritual health.  Oprah will be the acting chairwoman of OWN and will have total power over what is shown on the network.

Oprah is certainly not new to planning entertainment, or to TV production.  She actually co-founded the Oxygen network before it was sold to NBC.

In case you’re wondering, Oprah is coming back to television, even after her syndicated show ends.  The show is called “Oprah’s Next Chapter” and you can find it on primetime TV.  Who are some of the celebrities who will be debuting on Oprah’s new channel?  It’s quite a lineup, and you might even call it the daytime TV clique.  You have Dr. Laura, Lisa Sing, Dr. Phil, Sarah, the Duchess of York, and Rosie O’Donnell, and even Shania Twain.

There are also some exciting reality shows debuting on OWN, including shopping shows, a rehab reality show, and a show called “Excellent Adventure” (in which a celebrity meets a fan and they spend the day together).  Other specials include “Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star,” “Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes,” “Kidnapped By the Kids” and “Oprah Presents Master Class.”

There are certainly some big names and high concepts debuting on OWN.  Oprah’s following is eagerly awaiting 2011 and 2012!
