How to Naturally Fight Insomnia

Insomnia can be a terrible burden.  It can rob you of your alertness and can even cause serious health problems.  The most common way to deal with insomnia is to take an over the counter sleep aid.  However, there are gentle, natural sleep remedies available that can help you get your rest without the side effects of medication.

Valerian

One of the best options out there is to use valerian.  This herb has been used for thousands of years to help people get sleep when it seems elusive.  Valerian is a natural sleep aid, and can be purchased at any drugstore.

Melatonin

You can also take melatonin to help you sleep.  Unlike valerian, melatonin is not an herb.  Instead, it is a natural hormone produced by the body to help with sleep.  Those with depression or mental health issues should avoid this sleep aid, though.  It also reduces the effectiveness of the female birth control pill, so young women on the pill should consult their doctor before taking the supplement.

Kava

Kava is another herb that can help with sleep.  This doesn’t help you fall asleep, though; it helps to combat anxiety that might be keeping you from getting the sleep that you need.  Kava is not as gentle as some products out there, and be warned that if you take too much of it, you can risk liver damage.

Relaxation Techniques

If you want a good, natural way to get to sleep without the use of herbs or medications, then relaxation techniques like visualization, relaxation response and yoga can help you calm your mind and get some rest.  These sleep aids provide significant benefits, without any side effects, and might be the safest way to catch some Zs.

If you have extensive trouble sleeping, visit a sleep study center to be tested for more serious conditions.
