Keeping your body healthy and fit is important because it affects your overall well-being.  While you might exercise and eat right, if you are not getting enough sleep, it will negatively effect every part of your life.  In fact, too little of sleep can be the cause of numerous health conditions.

If you don’t get enough sleep, you will have a decrease in energy and stamina.  You will also find that you’re more irritable and have less patience, which can put you in dangerous situations.  For instance, if you become drowsy whilst driving, you can be involved in a serious accident that could have easily been avoided had you been more alert.  Your relationships with your loved ones will also suffer if your attitude and perspective on life is altered, as you may be constantly grumpy and irritable, and more inclined to get into arguments or fights.

You will also find that too little of sleep prevents your body from processing sugars correctly.  This can lead to weight gain, Type 2 diabetes, and dozens of other life-threatening conditions.  Those with diabetes face possible blindness, loss of limbs, and even death. Sleeping too little has been linked to an increase in obesity, which carries its own health risks.  Obesity can put you at risk for heart disease, liver problems, and even menstrual irregularities.


Blood Pressure Rise

 

Not sleeping enough is also a major contributing factor in developing high blood pressure.  If you get five hours or less of sleep per night, you are 50% more likely to have high blood pressure.  This can lead to strokes, heart attacks, headaches, and a decrease in vision.

Experts recommend eight hours of sleep per night – going too far above or below that mark can have severe implications for your health and wellness.  Often, the cause of poor sleep is your mattress, so visit a mattress store to find out if yours needs replacing for the sake of your health.  If you find yourself suffering from many health issues, opting for more hours of sleep in the night is likely to bring your health back to its prime levels.  See your doctor if you have insomnia that has lasted longer than six weeks.
