How to Beat the Post Christmas Blues

The holidays are over.  The presents are unwrapped, the decorations are down, and all of the holiday parties are now just memories stored in your digital camera until you can find time to upload them to your computer.

When we reach January 2, the speed and frantic pace of the holidays suddenly stops and we have to go back to reality.  Many people find that they have trouble adjusting to the “real world” after the fun and the craziness of the holidays.  Who can blame them?  Who wants to go back to work or school after a nice vacation from reality over the holidays?

If you’ve been feeling the blues after the holidays, you are going to want to find a cure so that it doesn’t affect your health and wellness.  Depression is widespread in the winter months, with low light levels and short days, and the sudden slump after Christmas can cause some people to slide over the edge.

The most important thing to do is to look to the future and not dwell on the past year.  Consider the New Year as a time to re-energize and wipe your slate clean.  Begin to plan a few parties, host movie nights at your home or throw a block party so that you have something to look forward to.  Just because the holidays are over doesn’t mean you have to discontinue your fun and reason to celebrate.

Look in your community for different events to attend.  There should be plenty of plays, poetry readings and concerts in your area that you can buy tickets to.  Look at your local theaters or community center, and even see if an old friend would like to visit you.

To distract yourself even further, try planning a trip, even a little weekender.  Look for locations in your state that would be fun to take a road trip to, and plan activities, outings or  book a beautiful hotel.

Life doesn’t end after the holidays, and neither should your fun.
