The Top 10 Allergies and Symptoms to Watch For

Not everyone is allergic to food, but for those that are, the risks can be very high.  The risks can be high for young children, especially if they are consuming a new type of food for the first time.  By knowing which products people are most allergic to, you can be alert for the signs and symptoms of allergies in your young children, especially if you have a family history of allergies.

 

Some food is more risky to try than others.  Be careful trying these foods out for the first time.

 

1. Wheat:  Some people have such strong allergies to wheat flour that just inhaling it can be life-threatening.

 

2. Soy:  Though many children outgrow this allergy, soy allergies can be extremely bad for young children.

 

3. Shellfish:  Those who may be at risk for this allergy should be tested before trying it since this condition can lead to immediate reactions.  However, most shellfish allergies do not present until adulthood.

 

4. Fish:  Cod and salmon are the most allergic varieties.

 

5. Tree Nuts:  This includes cashews, almonds and walnuts, and this allergy often lasts a lifetime.

 

6. Peanuts:  This is one of the most common and most lethal allergies.

 

7. Eggs:  Some people are allergic to the whole egg, while others are allergic to just the whites or only the yolk.

 

8. Milk:  Two to five percent of people have this allergy, although other milk options are available.

 

9. Sesame:  This allergy is more prevalent in Japan and China, but can affect anyone in the U.S.

 

10. Celery:  Celery causes skin irritation and swelling.

 

If you child or other family member is exhibiting symptoms of an allergy, talk to your doctor about what can be done to reduce symptoms.  If symptoms such as facial swelling, trouble breathing or symptoms of shock are present, visit the ER ward immediately.
