How to Reduce Bloating During Pregnancy

If you’re not feeling well during your pregnancy, bloating caused by excess gas just adds insult to injury. Many women find that they have much more gas and bloating during pregnancy. What can you do to make your pregnancy less unpleasant?

First, know that you’re not alone. The extra gas during pregnancy is caused by a change in your hormone levels, which act to slow down the rate at which food passes through your system. Your uterus is also expanding and pushing into your digestive tract. You may notice that you’re also dealing with constipation at the same time because your food is sitting for longer periods in your system, making you feel bloated, out of sorts, and just plain uncomfortable.

Exercise can get things moving again, and for most women, exercise can safely be done throughout most of their pregnancy. You can also examine what you’re eating. Legumes and certain vegetables (like broccoli and cauliflower) can often cause more gas than usual during pregnancy. This is where you have to decide if you want the nutrition from such gas-producing veggies, or if it’s not worth it to you. You can’t stop eating healthy foods, so some gas may be inevitable.

Some women prefer to wait until they arrive home at night to eat foods that they know contribute to their problem, and then eat lighter foods when out in public during the day. Individual triggers may vary; the foods that you can safely eat during your pregnancy may bother other women during their pregnancy. By exercising and paying attention to your personal triggers, you can make your pregnancy a bit less uncomfortable.
