How to Start Model Train Collecting

Model train collecting can be a fun and consuming hobby.  One of the challenges, however, is choosing which model train to start with.  This depends on whether you plan to set up your own model railroad or to simply collect trains for display on a shelf.

There are several different scales of model train available.  Most new collectors go for the HO scale model train setups, which are large enough to be manipulated and worked on comfortably, but are also small enough to allow you to create an extensive model train railway in your home.  There are smaller scales, such as N, available to collectors, as well, but these are usually reserved for the most advanced hobbyists out there.

When it comes to model trains, there are fantastically expensive models on the market.  Some sets are so expensive that you’ll want to keep them in mint condition.  This means leaving them in their packaging, of course, which is not usually what people have in mind when they buy a model train – and especially not if you have kids!  You may want to pick up a less expensive model train kit so that you or your child can play and enjoy the experience and keep the truly collectible model train kits in their packaging.

Remember that a model train can sometimes increase a great deal in worth unexpectedly, so keep an eye on train collecting hobby sites and let people know what you have.  This is one of the friendliest hobby communities out there, and most advanced model train fans will be glad to give you advice.
