How to Replace Your Car Air Filter

Replacing the air filter in your car is simple, and anyone should be able to do it with very little trouble.  A new air filter can help your car to run better and more efficiently, and by doing it yourself you’ll save between $15-$30 per change.

The first thing that you need to do when you are going to replace it is make sure that you have a new air filter on hand.  You can consult your owner’s manual, or you can talk with the employees at the auto repair store.  They will be able to direct you to the right filter for your vehicle.

Park Your Car Correctly

Once you have your new air filter, make sure that your car is parked on a level surface and that the ignition is off.  You also want to make sure that the car is cool when you replace the filter or do any work under the hood. 

Find and Fit the Filter

First, open the hood and find the air filter unit.  It is usually located on top of the engine and will be in a round, square metal or plastic case.

Remove the cover to the plastic casing so you can get to the air filter.  It may have a clamp or a wing nut.  You will find the filter inside.  Remove it by simply lifting it out.  Clean out the air filter housing and then replace with the new filter.  Make sure that you put the new filter in correctly, with the rubber rim facing up.  Close and secure the filter cover.  It’s as simple as that!

You should change the air filter at least once each year, and even more consistently if you live in a hot climate that has a lot of dust.  It’ll help your car run more smoothly so you can avoid any bumps in the road (no pun intended).
