How to Research and Find Out the History of Your Home

If you have an older home, you have probably wondered from time to time about the history of your house and whether anything of historical significance ever occurred there.  When was it built?  Who lived there before you?  If you have these questions about your home, you will find that with a little dedication and research, you can get the answers you need.

The first thing that you will want to do is look at your home from a building materials point of view.  You will be able to determine some of the history from the architectural style and the materials used in the home.  If you go online and look up when these building materials were commonly used in house-building, this can give you a basic idea of the age of the structure.

However, if you want to know more about the people in the home, you will want to head down to the County Clerk or Recorder’s office.  At the office, you will be able to request copies of the register of deeds.  This will give you the names of everyone who owned the home before you.  If you want, you can even contact some of the house’s previous owners to learn more about the home.

Talk with your neighbors, as well.  Those who have been in the area for many years can often give you some insight into your home.  Check the local libraries to see if they have old copies of the town newspapers on microfilm or in a computer database.

It might take some time, but if there were any interesting or strange events that took place in or near your home, you should be able to find out all about them.
