How to Fix a Loose Tub Faucet Spout

Saving money is important.  Having the ability to make some simple household repairs on your own will help you to save a surprising amount of money.

A common problem around the house is a loose faucet spout in the tub.  Over time, the fittings on the spout can loosen or rust, and this can cause you to waste water without even realizing it.  You should repair or replace the faucet when you notice a problem.

Before you begin, make sure that you turn off the water supply.  Look at the faucet to see what type it is.  Many have a set screw located beneath the faucet, and you will be able to check this with the help of an Allen wrench.  You might find that the screw is already loose, and turning it clockwise will tighten it and the faucet.

This might be all you need to do to fix the problem.  If the screw is old, you might want to replace it.  In fact, if you are losing water, you should replace the whole faucet.

To replace the faucet, first make sure the mains water is turned off.  Loosen the screw with the Allen wrench and you will then be able to remove the spout.  It should slide over the water line with a slight twisting motion.  The faucet might not even have a screw.  If it doesn’t, you should simply be able to twist it to remove it.

Visit your local home improvement store and buy a new faucet.  Make sure that the faucet that you buy contains all of the parts that you need.  You will be able to find small replacement pieces at most DIY or hardware stores.
