How to Fix Your Squeaky Wood Floor Fast

Most people love their hardwood floor, but when you have a squeaky floor, the squeak can become annoying very quickly.  Fortunately, you will find some very easy DIY fixes that you can try before you have to call in a carpenter to deal with the floor.  Here are a few simple fixes that should work for your wood floor problem.

What is causing the squeak?  Squeaks are the result of two pieces of the wood rubbing one another.  There is a possibility that the wood has moved away from the subfloor, or that there is a gap between the joists and the subfloor.  Whenever someone walks across the area, it will squeak.

Locate the squeaky part of the floor by having someone walk across it.  If the squeak is on the first floor and you have a basement, or on your second floor and you have dropped ceiling tiles, you can go downstairs and pinpoint the exact part that squeaks.

The fix itself is extremely simple.  If you have access to the joist, you will be able to use a wood shim (just a small piece of wood that will fit between the joist and the floor) and wood glue.  Apply glue to the shim or in the gap.  Use a mallet to place the shim in between the two squeaking boards.  File it down, and varnish to make it match the surrounding wood.

Another option for your squeaky floor that is simple to apply is rearranging your furniture.  You can place a large piece of furniture, such as a sofa, over the offending area as long as the sofa isn’t in the way.  This isn’t a true fix, but it can help until you have the time and money to call a professional out.
