Top 10 Best American Cities for Retirement

The best city for you to live in during your retirement will depend upon many different factors.  You’ll have to determine what type of climate you want, how high the taxes are and what kind of driving conditions you want to deal with (among others).

Here are some of the most popular destinations, according to Forbes.com.

Albuquerque, NM

A popular retirement destination with a pleasant, southwest climate and a low tax rate.  The city is notable for having great food and for being the home of the annual balloon festival.  Its drawbacks include the lack of easily walked areas and its higher crime rate.

Colorado Springs, CO

The taxes are affordable and the streets are safe enough to add some nightlife to your retirement plans.  The winters, however, are very cold.

Fargo, ND

Very safe streets and a low cost of living make retirement in Fargo easy.  The brutal winters and huge snowfall amounts, however, make driving and heating your home a nightmare sometimes.

Charlotte, SC

Great access to doctors and a rather affordable cost of living make this a compelling choice for retirement.  The summers can pretty hot though.

Jacksonville, FL

There’s no state income tax to deal with, but you’ll pay high taxes for just about everything else.  The cost of living is affordable, however, and this is a popular city for retirement.

Tucson, AZ

The taxes are low and the weather is very warm.  Tucson’s main drawback is the crime rate, which can turn some retirees off from the community.  The summers get very hot too.

Indianapolis, In

This is a great city for retirement in many ways. The weather isn’t too brutal in terms of summer heat or winter cold and there is plenty of activity in the city.

Nashville, TN

Nashville has an affordable cost of living, but crime is one of its drawbacks.  The music scene, of course, is something beyond legendary.

Lexington, KY

Another city with low crime and a lot to offer in the way of culture.  The cost of living is affordable.  The crime is also low.  The summers can be very hot and humid.

Charlotte, NC

Like Charlotte, SC, it has a lot to offer.  It has an affordable cost of living and is an easy city for driving around.

Omaha, NE

Higher taxes and inclement winter weather are the main drawbacks.  It’s a very safe city, however, and there are plenty of medical resources available.  The cost of living is quite affordable.

Pittsburg, PA

There are tax breaks available for retired people living in this city.  The cost of living is quite affordable.

Retirement can be a lot more fun when you’re in the right city.  Be sure to factor in all the things that make a city work for you in your decision.  For instance, if you don’t mind a city that’s a little hectic where driving is concerned, bigger might be more fun, while more doctors might be more important to other people.
