How to Sell Your Old Gold Jewelry Without Getting Ripped Off

If you have some old gold jewelry that you want to sell, you are probably looking for the best places to get rid of it.  Many different places in your town or city will be ready and willing to buy gold today, but you want to make sure that you are able to get the best money possible for it.

For starters, you’ll get the best price if you sell it yourself to someone who actually wants to keep it and wear it, or to a local jeweler.  The alternative is selling it to a gold buying company, but if your item has sentimental value, then be aware that most gold-buying businesses are simply going to melt it down.  When you sell jewelry for scrap, it loses the retail value of the piece.

Keep in mind that even though the value of gold is high right now, the price of a nice piece of gold jewelry is going to be higher because of the craftsmanship that went into it and the aesthetics of the piece.  The beauty or craftsmanship in the piece has zero value to a gold-buying business, as they will simply buy it by weight, not by it’s looks.

When you are deciding what to do with your old gold, you can easily determine if you want to sell the piece as jewelry or as scrap.  If the item is plain and simple, you might be better off choosing to sell it for scrap, because it won’t fetch as high of a price elsewhere.  The better gold pieces should be sold to places such as jewelry stores and pawnshops.  You can even sell the gold piece yourself through online sites such as eBay or amazon.com.

Before you decide to sell, you might want to think about having someone appraise the gold jewelry so you can find out its value first.  If it is an item that has been in your family for generations, you should at the very least find out its history and true value, or you could be short-changing both yourself and the jewelry’s creator.
