How to Get a Federal Tax ID for Your Business

Do you own a business that has employees?  If so, you need to be able to provide a federal tax ID or Employer Identification Number when tax time rolls around.  The good news is that obtaining a federal tax ID is not as hard as you might think.  If you have employees, operate as a corporation or partnership, and/or file annual tax returns, here is how to get a federal tax ID.

The first thing you should do when you need a tax ID is visit IRS.gov.  Here, you will find everything you need to apply for a federal tax ID online or to print the paperwork you need to do so by mail.  Filing online is easy and convenient, and your info can be quickly validated so that you can receive your federal tax ID immediately.

If you choose not to use the web, you can download form SS-4 from the IRS website or visit your local IRS office to fill out and turn in the form. You can also apply by calling 800-829-4933 during business hours.

No matter which method you choose, the IRS has made it as simple as possible for businesses to get a tax ID.
