How to Teach Your Children to Read Nutrition Labels

In the last few years, many of us have learned the importance of reading nutrition labels. You just never know what grocery store foods may contain a high degree of ingredients that simply are not healthy for us to consume, including high amounts of sugar and sodium.

While you may make healthy eating decisions for your children while they are still kids, if they do not learn to make health decisions on their own, it can set them up for a life of unhealthy eating. In today’s fast-food culture it is more important than ever to teach children how to make healthy eating decisions.

One great way to do that is by teaching children how to correctly read nutrition labels. By teaching your children how to quickly read a nutrition label and understand how much is too much in terms of fat, sugar, sodium and other elements, you will be teaching your children how to make healthy eating decisions that will serve them well into the future. This can be particularly important if one or more of your children has a health condition, such as high blood sugar.

Even without such health conditions, teaching your children how to read nutrition labels will give them the tools they need to take charge of their own health, so they need not suffer from health conditions that plague so many Americans, including heart disease, obesity and diabetes.
