How to Choose the Tastiest Type of Apple

You have probably heard that an apple a day keeps the doctor away.  While it might be a cliché now, there is a lot of truth to this statement.  When you add healthy fruits, such as apples, to your diet, you are going to be healthier in the long run and you’ll have fewer health problems in the future.

Although apples are healthy, there are many different types, each offering different nutritional values.  So which is the all-round best apple to eat?

Best Types of Apples

Red Delicious apples are popular in the United States, and they have a large amount of polyphenols – a type of natural antioxidant.  Red Delicious apples are best for making desserts, as they’re the sweetest overall.

Golden Delicious are famed for their honey-like flavor and light, softer skins.  Fuji apples have the highest fiber content and the highest level of flavonoids of all apples.

Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Cortland, and Cox apples all have some excellent health benefits, and are similar in nutritional makeup, with their high natural sugar content, and decent amount of fiber.

Apple-Eating Tips

No matter the type of apple you choose to eat, you are going to want to make sure that you eat the peel.  You will find the highest concentration of antioxidants and fiber in the skin.  Make sure that you wash the apple well before you eat it to get rid of any dirt.  Soap and water don’t wash off any waxes or pesticides very well, so opt for buying a fruit-cleaning mixture at your local supermarket or produce market to wash off residue from the chemicals.

If you are still debating over which apple to eat, you should probably choose the one that you like the taste of the best.  Although, make sure that you are eating fresh apples and not candied apples or apple pies!
