How to Save Space in Your Basement

For most people, space is at a premium around the house. Even the basement can become crowded, often with items that you’ve moved from other parts of the house to have more room upstairs.

If you want to have more room in the basement, perhaps even add a second family room or game room down in the basement, you are going to need to clear some space space. Here are five tips that will help you clear your basement and save space.

First, you will want to organize all of the items that you have in your basement and figure out which ones you need. You can sell the items that you don’t need online or at a tag or yard sale.

Next, buy some plastic boxes from Wal-Mart, Home Depot, or another home organization store. Make sure that the shelves you buy for your basement are large enough to hold all of the items you have. Stackable shelves work best, and you will be able to stack them in one corner of the basement.

You can give your basement a larger appearance by hiding the hot water heater. A simple standing folding screen in front of the heater and furnace is easy to find and use from any home decoration store.

If you are going to add furniture to a finished basement, consider buying space saving furniture that acts as a storage unit as well as functional furniture, such as a table that opens to reveal a storage cavity.

Lastly, you need to make sure that you don’t use your basement as a storage area. It sounds simple, but many people continue to place old items into the basement after they’ve cleaned it out and made more space, exacerbating the problem.
