Always make sure that you clean the area with cold water, as hot water can set the stain.

Hydrogen peroxide is excellent for getting blood out of many types of fabrics, including the mattress. Cold water and meat tenderizer are also useful for removing bloodstains on the mattress. Always make sure you dry the area thoroughly with a hairdryer before you sleep on the mattress, so you’ll wind up with damp sheets and a smelly mattress. A good idea to to wash the stain the night before you are due to spend a weekend away from the house, then the mattress will be dry when you get home.
