How to Get Your Home Ready to Renovate

If you are getting ready for home renovation, there is much to do.  Not only must you find a contractor and set aside the money needed to get the project done, but there is a great deal of work to do yourself before the build team arrives.  Here is what you need to do to prepare for a home renovation project.

Once everything is set and you know when the project is slated to begin, it is time to start preparing the house.  If only a single room is undergoing renovation, you can likely do the work quickly.  You will want to remove all of your personal items and furniture from the room being renovated.  You can put things in the basement, use a storage shed, or simply keep them in the garage or an extra room, but the space needs to be empty before renovation begins.

If any items cannot be removed from the room before work begins, be sure to cover them with a thick tarpaulin or plastic sheet, and make sure the item is insured if it is valuable!

Other things you will need to do include separating the room being renovated from the rest of the home.  This is especially important if you have pets.  You can keep your pets locked in a bedroom or basement, but purchasing a plastic or metal room divider that fits in the entryway can still give your animals room to play without having to shut them away for weeks or even months at a time.

If you are doing an entire home renovation that involves, paint, dust and fumes, you will need to consider moving all of your items into storage.  This means getting rid of perishable food products and finding a suitable place for your things during the project.  It also means finding a place to keep your pets while you are gone.  Taking these steps as early as possible can eliminate last minute surprises and ensure that your renovation project goes smoothly.
