How to Stop a Dripping Tap Quickly

Is the constant dripping in your sink starting to drive you mad?  Are you concerned about wasting water and just want the noise and the issue to stop?  The good news is that you can do it yourself without calling in an expensive plumber.

When you are looking to fix a dripping tap, the first thing that you want to do is shut off the water to your sink.  The knobs will most likely be under your sink, but there is a chance that you will have to turn off the main valve in your utility room or basement to stop the flow of water in an older home.  When the valve is off, open the tap fully to drain any water still inside.

When you are done, remove the cover on top of the cap.  It is typically plastic and can be removed with a flat head screwdriver.  Beneath this, you will find screws that need to be removed.  Take off all of the rubber washers that you find when all of the screws are removed and you have lifted the faucet.  Replace each rubber washer with a new one to form a water tight seal.

Once all of the washers have been replaced, put your faucet back into place and start reinserting all of the screws.  When all of the screws are back in place and tightened, reinstall the plastic cap over the faucet.

Turn the water supply to the sink back on and open the tap.  You should find that the leak is stopped and that your tap is now fully functional once again. No more drips!
