Why Dog Shelters are the Best Place to Get Your New Pet

When you are looking to adopt a new pet, it can be stressful trying to determine whether dog shelters and animal rescue centers are really the best choice.  After all, many people have a misconception of them as being a place where unwanted, sick, or mean animals are surrendered.

In truth, dog shelters are loving places dedicated to saving the lives of the abandoned, the needy and the homeless animals of your very own community. They give pets a second chance at life when they are abandoned due to the carelessness or callousness of their previous owner.

The most common types of dogs in dog shelters are very small breeds and very large breeds.  In many cases, pedigree labs, huskies, and the like are dropped off because their owners didn’t realize how big they would grow up to be.  Bully breeds are common as well, frequently dropped off at dog shelters because landlords misunderstand the breed and refuse to allow the animals to stay.

Others are dropped off because their owners don’t understand how to train them, or failed to give them the mixture of discipline and love that every growing dog (as indeed any child) needs to become a healthy, thriving adult.

Dog shelters really can be heartwarming places to visit, and the service they provide to your community is incredibly valuable.  Shelter pets are among the most loving and caring dogs in the world, and form extra-strong bonds with their new owners in an attempt to win their hearts after what they see as a former abandonment.

Adopting a rescue dog is something that any prospective owner should consider.  While adopting a purebred dog is great for people who are looking to enter dog shows, a typical rescue “mutt” can be one of the greatest friends and companions your family will ever know.

If you are thinking of adopting a pet, it can be well worth your time and effort to visit your local dog shelter to find your new companion.
