How to Choose the Right Vet for Your Pet

Ensuring that your pet is properly cared for at all times means finding a good veterinarian.  However, not all vets are right for you or your pet.  You need to make sure that you are able to choose the best clinic (and the best vet in that clinic) for your particular animal in order to have confidence that you are fully protected at all times.

Begin with Research

Before you take your pet in for a checkup with any vet, you need to do a bit of research.  You can ask family and friends who own pets about their vet.  You can also check for reviews of different clinics online and with the Better Business Bureau.

Do a Walk Through

One excellent way to determine if a clinic is right for your pet is to pay it a preliminary visit.  Ask if you can have a walk through of the facilities.  Look at the equipment and the animals that are currently in the office.  Everything should be clean and maintained well.  The staff should be professional and show a caring demeanor toward their patients.  Lack of customers/ patients is a sign that you should look elsewhere.

Schedule a Checkup

You should also determine what your pet thinks of the clinic and of the vet.  You can do this pretty easily.  By setting up a checkup with a vet that you like for your pet, you can gauge the reaction of your pet to the staff, the facility and the vet who will be caring for your pet.  If your dog is nervous, this should be expected and is nothing to be concerned about.  However, if your pet reacts badly to the vet, then you might need to choose another option.
