How to Tell Whether Your Dog is Pregnant

If you have a female dog who has not been spayed and spends any time outside near other dogs at the beach or dog park, there is always a chance that she can become pregnant.  Knowing if your dog is pregnant is important, as you’ll need to pay close attention to her health once you know she’s expecting.  Here are some symptoms of pregnancy in dogs.

Early pregnancy can often be noticed by a decrease in activity and a decreased appetite, though the latter will start to change quite quickly.  Your dog may also experience mood and behavior changes when she is pregnant.  Some dogs become overly affectionate, while others will want to be left completely alone.  Either of these can be a good indicator that your dog is pregnant.

Her nipples will also get larger and will develop breast tissue beneath them.  Just before the puppies are born, your dog will start getting restless and will start scrunching blankets or clothing to create a spot to give birth.  Offering an old blanket or a nesting bag can help protect your favorite items.

Of course the easiest way to know if your dog is pregnant is to take her to the vet.  He or she can easily offer an ultrasound that will confirm your suspicions.  A vet can also feel the pups in the womb around 20-30 days into term.

Monitoring your dog for signs of pregnancy can help you keep her healthy.  These tips will make it much easier to know if your dog might be pregnant.
