5 Quick Tricks to Save Energy (and Money) at Home

Conserving energy in your home is an important budget consideration and a great way to contribute to a cleaner environment.  There are many ways to modify your normal routine and practice energy saving.  Lowering your energy bill will save you money every month, which is great for most households.

Air-Dry Your Clothes

One easy way to save energy is by air drying clothes in the warmer months.  Instead of using the dryer, which uses a lot of energy, hang clothes on the line and allow them to air dry.  During the colder months, you can save money by running the dryer at night, and avoiding peak hours.  Running major appliances late at night will also lower your energy bill.

Flip the Switch

Another simple solution that will lower your energy bills is to turn off lights that aren’t in use.  This concept, which is easily forgotten or overlooked, can save you money each month.  You can also use energy efficient bulbs or change to lower wattage in rooms where low light is acceptable; opt for 15-watts instead of 60.

The same also applies to room air conditioners.  Anytime you will be out of the room for more than an hour, turn off the air conditioner to save energy.

Lower Water Heater Setting

You can also lower your water heater setting, which will improve energy efficiency and safety.  Often, water heaters are set much too high, which is both wasteful and dangerous.

Air Dry Dishes

Although it’s tempting to pop your dishes in the dishwasher, opt for hand-washing and air drying them rather than using a heated cycle.  This will save energy and money, and will get the job done just as effectively.

Turn Off Your Computers

Although many people believe it hurts your computer to turn it off when it’s not in use, this couldn’t be further from the truth.  Turning your monitor and computer off when you’re out of the home or doing other activities saves an incredible amount of energy over the lifetime of your computer, and will result in a lower bill.

With some simple steps taken throughout your home, it’s easy to lower your energy bill each month and save money.  Energy efficiency and green living go together, so it’s easy to do what’s best for your budget and the environment.
