How to Update Your Man’s Wardrobe

Are you tired of your man picking you up for a date wearing 90s board shorts and a torn acid-green checkered button up? Or worse, when he goes “Jersey Shore” and dresses like a peacock sporting gaudy graphic tees matched with ripped – and ripped some more – stonewashed 80’s jeans.

Many men seem to inherently lack style, and if you want to update your man’s wardrobe it may take a bit of coaxing. Here’s how to get started.

Step 1- Tell Him What You’re Going to Do First

Never surprise him by throwing out all of his old clothes and replacing them with new outfits. He’ll hit the roof and very likely go into mourning for his favorite ‘Scooby Do’ T-Shirt. What you think he looks good in is most likely different to his tastes. So to begin, let him know you want him to get new clothes. Feel free to point out the reasons why he needs to change his look, and let him give you feedback before you begin.

Step 2 – Take Him to a Store or Bring Some Samples

Every man I know loathes shopping for clothes. If we can’t eat it or hook it up to our X-Box, then we probably are not interested in it. If he’s willing, take him to a mall or clothing store and have him try on a few clothes.

If he refuses to go to the store with you, get his measurements and buy a few items for him. Give them to him as presents. Be careful not to choose items that you’ve never seen him wear. The trick is to shower him with many small gifts in your wished style until he becomes more open to trying the new style, not to bombard him with a completely different set of clothes.

Step 3 – Show Him Celebrities Looking Classy

Everyone has a favorite celebrity. Show your man a picture of their favorite actor, musician, or athlete wearing a similar style that you want him to wear. This is a great way to getting him interested in a wardrobe update. George Clooney is usually a safe bet, since every man respects him and he is known for his exceptional style.

Step 4 – Bait and Switch

Hopefully by this point he will be more enthusiastic about updating his wardrobe. All you have to do is take him to a clothing store and help him choose the right items. However, some men may still be hesitant to take a step forward and will revert to looking for the same exact style that you worked so hard to get rid of.

If this is the case, you may want to try the oldest trick in the book: the bait and switch. Bait your man into going to a store to buy his favorite shirt, and even offer to pay. When you get there, have him try on a number of clothes and stroke his ego a bit. Before you know it, you’ll be walking out of the store with a brand new wardrobe.

5 – Offer Reassurance

Despite you man’s pride, always remember that he is self-conscious to an extent. We do not want to go out looking ridiculous and be made fun of for our clothes. That’s why so many people stick to their old styles because they are afraid to try new things. It’s important to reassure him that you are trying to help him, and that yes, he can pull off a classy shirt and dress shoes if the occasion demands it.

With these tips, you’ll have your man looking like George Clooney in no time. Good luck!
