How to Choose a Gift for a Hard of Hearing or Deaf Child

If you have a friend who has a hearing-impaired or deaf child (or if you have one yourself), you’ll know that locating suitable toys and products can be a challenge. Fortunately, there are now many companies that produce toys and products that are geared more towards deaf children.

For instance, many toys and products are now specifically produced to help with learning American Sign Language. The ‘Sign Language Peg Puzzle’ is an excellent choice for deaf or hearing-impaired children. It contains non-toxic contents and is also large and brightly colored. Players match finger-spelled letters to appropriate pictures.

Another great toy is the ‘Keep Quiet Crossword Puzzle.’ This product is designed for deaf children who are at least 7 years old. It utilizes finger spelling and sign language within a timed setting, allowing players to improve their sign language skills. It’s a great way to improve ASL vocabulary, as well.

Sign Language Dice provide another wonderful way for practicing signing skills for deaf children. This game is also very portable, making it a good choice if you frequently travel with your child.

It is also important to understand that many traditional toys, including building toys such as K-Nex and Lego, will be just as fascinating to deaf children as well as hearing children. Arts and craft supplies are also excellent choices. These toys are excellent educational choices because they teach design, spatial relations, patience and more – skills that don’t rely on a sense of hearing.

Never make the mistake of assuming that certain toys will not interest deaf children simply because they make noise. In many cases toys that have buttons to push and flashing lights can be just as entertaining for deaf children, particularly younger children.
