Finding Gluten and Casein Free Foods for Children with Autism

It is truly amazing how many foods can affect the general well being of children, including mental and physical health.  Children with Autism already have a specific set of challenges before them, and finding foods that keep their children healthy and happy can be quite the challenge for parents.  Children with Autism are likely to have problems digesting foods with gluten or casein, which are described as foods with wheat or dairy products.  These foods can make children with Autism feel as though they are taking opiate-based drugs – and act out accordingly. The gluten and casein escape undigested and attach to opiate receptors in the brain.

Children with Autism will not at all want to change their diet, and you may have a very hard time convincing your child to stray from pasta, cheese, and bread.  For one thing, children with Autism truly enjoy these foods and the feelings of calm and satiety that they give.  For another, you will need to be more creative in your own food preparation, which can take quite a toll on you in the grocery store and in the kitchen. You should introduce these items slowly to your children, and give them several months to get accustomed to the differences.
Once your child is no longer ingesting gluten or casein, studies show that a more energetic and healthier child are the result.  If you have trouble finding enough creative foods for your Autistic child, you can also seek out online retailers who will deliver gluten-and-casein-free products to your home.
