Choosing Foods for Children with ADHT

Children with behavioral problems often exhibit symptoms from more than one disorder, such as ADHD, OCD, ODD, or depression.  Doctors and scientists have linked some of these behavior problems in children to the foods that children eat.

For instance, many foods with artificial coloring can provoke hyperactive behavior in children.  If this is the case with your children, then you should check the soft drinks, cereals, and candy that your children eat and consider switching to natural alternatives. The artificial color red (E120) seems to be a major trigger, and should be avoided at all costs.

Behavioral problems in kids are not new, of course, but there is a marked increase over the last few decades.  During these last thirty years, children have had increasing access to sugary cereals packed with artificial flavors and colors, soft drinks and juices with artificial sweeteners and colors, and lunch meats with artificial preservatives.  Not only can kids experience behavior issues after consuming these foods, but long-term health problems can also arise.

Check the ingredients before you buy any foods at the grocery store for your children.  Consider fruit juices over soft drinks and meats from the deli rather than sandwich meats in plastic bags.  If you have the time, prepare homemade soups instead of buying cans.  You will notice a marked difference in the behavior and overall health of your children, making this a worthwhile switch to make.
