How to Unlock Your Child’s True Potential by Discovering Their Learning Style

All children have different learning styles.  It is important to gain an understanding of how your child learns most effectively.  This will help to reinforce skills that will be necessary throughout your child’s life.

If your learning style is different from your child’s, it can be difficult to understand how they process information.  Determine their learning style in order to create a healthy and productive learning environment that will serve them well into the future.

Sight, Sound, and Touch

There are three different types of learning styles. Some children learn most efficiently by using their sense of sight.  If your child fits this category, then they are a visual learner.  They will best grasp concepts by reading or seeing an idea first.

Other children are auditory learners and need to hear instructions before they attempt to carry them out.  If your child is an auditory learner, they will benefit from having lessons explained to them step by step.

There are also children who are able to learn quickly through kinesthetic learning. In other words, they learn best when performing a lesson that includes body movements.  If your child’s learning style is kinesthetic, they will learn the most from “hands-on” learning.

How to Discover Your Child’s Learning Style

Asking your child the right questions can help you discover how they most effectively acquire and evaluate information.  Paying close attention to your child’s unique habits will help you discover their learning style.

For instance, how do they prefer to receive lessons at school?  Ask your child if they like to have instructions written out on the board or read aloud.  This will determine whether your child is a visual learner or an auditory learner.

How do you know if your child is a kinesthetic learner?  Does your child work well with their hands?  Many kinesthetic or “hands-on” learners are able to focus well when working on art projects or other lessons that involve movement.  Many are also natural performers, whether they enjoy acting classes, music lessons, athletics, or dance class.  Kinesthetic learners are typically unusually well-coordinated when it comes to body movement.  If you find that your child moves a lot – taps their feet, moves their legs, etc — while trying to grasp a concept, they may just be a kinesthetic learner.

Remember – One Size Does Not Fit All

If you have more than one child, you are probably aware of the great differences in behavior children have from one another.  When it comes to a child’s learning style, the same holds true.  You may have three children – one who is a visual learner, one who is an auditory learner, and one who is a kinesthetic learner.

While this may provide you with a challenge when it comes to helping your children understand important concepts, determining how each one of them learns best will help them tremendously in the long run.  Passing on your knowledge about your child to their teacher will create a learning environment that your child is able to thrive in.
